the tutors
Our DJ tutors have years of experience behind them playing at club events all over the UK. Many have travelled internationally performing their sets at different clubs and events. Out of the club scene, our tutors are regularly running workshops for councils and youth organisations using their experience as a key element when it comes to teaching their workshop participants all the tricks of the trade.
the workshop
To kick off this workshop participants will learn the art of mixing two musical tracks together and all that's involved in it. Learn how to match the tempos of the tracks and also about musical counts and bars plus how to cue up a track ready to mix. After participants have perfected the mix they will be given the task to put together a 'mix selection'. This is where each participant will need to choose 3 or 4 of their favourite tracks and will then practice mixing them one after the other until their selection is finished. Learning when to introduce each track is a key skill.
Once their mix selection is practiced, the participants will get the opportunity to learn the basics of 'scratching'. This may sound destructive but scratching records to create certain sounds has been a big part of hip hop DJing for decades.
To round off the workshop each participant will be given the chance to perform their mix selection to the other workshop participants.
the summary
Overall this workshop is very practical and seems to really boost the confidence of all participants involved. Because of the mix selection participants will go home with a selection of tracks that they know they can mix well together due to the workshop. Each pupil will go away from the workshop with a sense of achievement and a wider, confident knowledge of how to DJ like a professional.
